The Labor Ministry Wage Board has declared that a minimum wage hike is not going to be considered for at least another two years.
The announcement came after workers requested the government to raise the daily minimum wage to 388 baht to cover basic living expenses, and that their minimum daily income should increase to 498 baht in the next three years to cope with the rising costs of living.
The ministry said that according to a survey conducted on over 20,000 workers in June of last year, the average daily expense for a worker stands at no more than 270 baht. For this reason, the ministry has the ministry has no immediate plans to raise it any time soon, as the minimum wage has already been increased to 300 baht per day.
Following last year’s historic wage hike, the board had agreed to not consider another raise for at least two years.
The ministry plans to re-assess the conditions of Thai labor workers again in June of this year. If there is evidence that their daily expenses jumps from the current rate, the ministry will forward the data to the board to consider raising the wages.
